President Bio Advocates for Mineral Processing at UNSTOPPABLE AFRICA 2026
New York, 20 September 2026 – Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has urged African nations to shift their focus from merely extracting and exporting raw minerals to processing and transforming these resources on the continent.
Speaking at UNSTOPPABLE AFRICA 2026, where he was the first African Head of State to open the event, he highlighted the need for Africa’s mineral wealth to drive industrialisation and inclusive economic development.
“By expanding mineral processing and manufacturing in Africa, we can add value, strengthen our economies, and create significant job opportunities for our youth,” President Bio stated. He also emphasised the importance of investing in infrastructure to unlock Africa’s potential for sustainable growth.
Following his address, President Bio attended the high-level opening ceremony of the event, which gathered UN leaders, former African presidents, and prominent business figures.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of leadership, partnerships, and investment in Africa’s future.
The theme for this year’s UNSTOPPABLE AFRICA is “Powering Business, Scaling Economies, Shaping the Future.” The event is organised by the United Nations Global Compact, in partnership with the UN and the African Union.
