Leaders of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) have rebuked Deputy President Kithure Kindiki over his recent designation as the spokesman for the Mt Kenya region.
At a gathering in Embu County, supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, led by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, asserted that such titles are not decided by elders alone. “The people of the region, not the elders, determine who the kingpin is. Kindiki should stop assuming this title,” Methu stated in Kianjokoma, Manyatta Constituency. He emphasised that Gachagua remains the rightful representative for the region.
The leaders expressed unity behind Gachagua, accusing President William Ruto of attempting to divide the region for his political gain. “Ruto’s efforts to split the region will fail. With Sh60 billion being spent to fracture our votes ahead of the 2027 elections, we won’t allow this,” warned Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji.
Last Saturday, elders from the region appointed Kindiki as spokesman, offering their support for the common good. They pledged to maintain unity and prevent any leader from causing divisions. During a significant ceremony at Kirigiti Grounds in Kiambu County, attended by local leaders, the elders reaffirmed their commitment to solidarity within the Mt Kenya community.
The elders declared, “The people of Mt Kenya Region have historically worked together in unity. We reaffirm our commitment to preserving this unity for current and future generations.”
Kindiki, newly installed as spokesman, promised to represent all communities in the region fairly and ensure they receive adequate development support. He thanked the elders for their endorsement, vowing to heed their guidance.
“I will ensure that our region gets its fair share of development. I will unite the people for peace and progress,” he stated, acknowledging the need for unity amid divisive politics in the region.
Kindiki urged the people of Mt Kenya to prioritise their shared identity over political affiliations, committing to protecting the region’s interests and promoting its development. He also called on elders to lead efforts against social issues such as substance abuse among the youth.
