Protests are occurring across France today as various groups, including fishermen, police officers, energy workers, and university staff, voice their concerns over pay, working conditions, and the high cost of living.

Fishermen began blocking an oil depot at 3am in Fos-sur-Mer, disrupting around 50 tanker lorries. This action follows previous demonstrations in Sète and Port-Vendres. They are demanding discussions with Fishing Minister Catherine Chabaud, citing rising fuel costs and increasing regulations as significant issues affecting their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, thousands of police officers are set to march on the Champs-Élysées to the National Assembly, following a call to protest from the Alliance Police Nationale union. They are asking for better pay, a bonus for riot police and border officers, as well as improved recognition for staff working in prefectures.

In the energy sector, electricity and gas workers intend to strike against proposed changes to their preferential energy rates, which are part of their compensation package. Unions anticipate that over 80% of workers will join the strike, asserting that the current rate is vital for those earning below the minimum wage.

University staff and researchers are also mobilising against chronic underfunding in higher education and public research, as well as deteriorating working conditions. A coalition of unions claims that higher education is lacking €8 billion and public research another €8 billion. Today’s protests in Paris and other cities are seen as a precursor to a larger national event scheduled for 29 September.

Finally, various unions, including firefighters and environmental groups, have organised a protest outside the Economy Ministry to demand resources for climate change initiatives. They are urging the inclusion of several emergency measures in the upcoming 2027 budget, such as a tax on major polluters and increased funding for wildfire prevention.
