Sierra Leone’s Under-15 football team clinched the Tier D title at the FIFA youth football festival in Azerbaijan, defeating Oman 2-1 in the classification final. This victory secured them ninth place out of 32 teams, as confirmed by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).
The young Leone Stars concluded their campaign on a high note, following impressive wins against Turkey (5-1) and Djibouti (5-0), showcasing their offensive prowess by scoring 12 goals across these three matches, while conceding just one.
Although the team did not compete for the overall championship, their win in the classification final marked the highest achievement possible in their tier. The SLFA commended the players and coaching staff for their efforts, emphasising the significance of this success for the development of youth football in Sierra Leone.
The festival served as a platform for young players to gain international experience and build cultural ties with other countries. The ninth-place finish is a promising sign for the future of youth football in the nation, encouraging ongoing investment in grassroots competitions, coaching, and player development. The Under-15s return home with a title and invaluable experience that can aid their growth in the sport.
