The Senate has approved a bill establishing a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano State. The legislation, put forward by Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, passed during a session led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The bill aims to ensure the effective management and administration of the university. In September 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the conversion of the Federal Colleges of Education in Kano and Zaria into federal universities, followed by the institution’s renaming in May 2025 at Barau’s request.
Addressing the Senate, Barau emphasised the importance of the legislation for providing legal support to the newly designated university and highlighted the upgrade and renaming of the institution as crucial steps for enhancing teacher education in Nigeria. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for responding positively to local demands for these changes.
Senate President Akpabio praised Barau for his efforts and anticipated the President’s swift assent to the bill, which would enable the university to effectively fulfil its educational mandate and contribute to the nation’s development.
