Joseph Kamara Released from Jail as Supreme Court Proceedings Resume
Sierra Leone’s Supreme Court in Freetown has resumed its proceedings regarding a controversial parliamentary vote that affects constitutional amendments. Government lawyers and representatives from the opposition All Peoples’ Congress Party (APC) are presenting their arguments following a recent decision by the Speaker of Parliament.
Former Attorney General Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, who is serving as senior counsel for the APC, was released from jail this morning after being arrested last week during court sessions at the directive of Chief Justice Komba Kamanda. The arrest followed a heated exchange between Kamara and the Chief Justice over legal procedural issues.
Chief Justice Kamanda had demanded an apology from Kamara, which was given but not accepted. Subsequently, the Chief Justice imposed a custodial sentence, drawing criticism for perceived overreach of authority.
After spending five days in prison, Kamara is now expected to return to the Supreme Court to continue his representation of the APC in the ongoing case.
