Bagamoyo: The government has disbursed 49 billion shillings in compensation to residents required to relocate for the Bagamoyo Port Strategic Project, advancing preparations for this significant infrastructure investment.
Stephen Mbogela, an official from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), announced this during a visit to the project site by Coast Regional Commissioner Stanslaus Nyongo.
Mbogela noted that the government has completed the valuation and acquisition of 887 hectares for the project. He added that the feasibility study and preliminary designs are complete, with efforts underway to procure a contractor for deepening the port’s entrance channel and turning basin.
Nyongo assured that the government is following proper procedures to ensure all eligible residents receive their compensation, enabling project progression. He highlighted the port’s importance, stating, “It is crucial not only for this region’s development but for our nation as a whole. Our government values all residents who have given up their land and they will receive their entitlements.”
He explained that the completed port will reduce congestion at Dar es Salaam Port, connect port operations with industrial parks, and create employment and investment opportunities.
In another development, a graphite mining project in Chalinze District, Bagamoyo, is set to commence production by year-end, creating 300 jobs initially and up to 5,000 at peak capacity. Investor Jumbe Nungu informed Nyongo’s delegation that the project will require an investment of 263.5 billion shillings, with mineral resources projected to sustain operations for around 100 years.
The project is expected to enhance graphite utilisation in modern technologies, including electric vehicle battery manufacturing and clean energy applications. Nyongo stated that the government remains committed to fostering a favourable investment climate to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
