Protesters disrupted activities at the Durban Refugee Centre, leading to violent clashes between local residents and foreign nationals. The confrontation spread to the city centre, resulting in several vehicles being set on fire and shops looted.
The unrest is believed to have been sparked by the shooting of protesters, with groups including March and March activists, IFP supporters, ActionSA, and MK party members taking part. Although not yet confirmed by the KwaZulu-Natal police, tensions were running high as the situation escalated.
Authorities cordoned off Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street and Brook Street to prevent further violence. Some marchers formed small groups and began throwing stones at shops. Earlier, police were forced to use stun grenades to separate the agitated crowds and avert further clashes.
Foreign nationals had been lining up on Che Guevara Road to apply for asylum, but were met with angry protesters blocking their path.
