In 1995, Sierra Leone was being torn apart by a brutal civil war. The Revolutionary United Front had seized valuable diamond-producing territory and was advancing toward the capital. With government forces struggling to stop them, Sierra Leone turned to an unusual solution: a private military company called Executive Outcomes.
Executive Outcomes arrived with only a small force of experienced soldiers, backed by helicopters and aggressive tactics. Within months, they helped push the RUF away from Freetown, retook critical territory around the country’s diamond fields, and changed the course of the war. Their success made Executive Outcomes one of the most controversial and effective private military companies of the modern era.
In this episode of Forgotten History, we examine the rise of Executive Outcomes, its intervention in Sierra Leone, how such a small force achieved results against a much larger enemy, and what happened after the mercenaries were ordered to leave.
