Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Okezie Ikpeazu, has urged for a renewal of bilateral agreements with Spain, including the Bilateral Air Service Agreement, to enhance economic cooperation and strengthen relations between the two nations.
Ikpeazu made this request following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Monday, marking the beginning of his diplomatic mission. In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ikpeazu conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s greetings to the Spanish monarch and expressed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing bilateral ties in areas like trade, investment, energy, agriculture, education, and tourism.
He stated, “Nigeria is ready to collaborate with the Spanish government and private sector to create new economic opportunities and boost trade.” Speaking at a reception hosted by the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, Ikpeazu emphasised the need to review existing agreements to reflect current diplomatic and economic priorities, noting that improved direct air connectivity would enhance tourism and facilitate partnerships.
The ambassador also called for a sustained bilateral partnership involving public institutions, the private sector, and civil society. He expressed gratitude to the Spanish people for their warm welcome and committed to furthering Nigeria’s interests while strengthening ties.
He highlighted the significant potential for cooperation between the two countries and the role of the Nigerian community in Spain in fostering mutual understanding. The reception was attended by diplomats, Spanish government representatives, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian community, underlining the embassy’s commitment to turning goodwill into tangible outcomes.
Nigeria and Spain share a long-standing relationship with collaboration in various sectors.
