In Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, a former government compound has been converted into a temporary migrant shelter, providing refuge to those displaced and struggling to find their footing. Among them is Barbara*, who fled persecution in Ethiopia only to find herself unexpectedly deported to Cameroon. Barbara was forcibly removed from the US on April 28, 2026, after she had been granted “withholding of removal,” a protection preventing her from being sent back to her home country on the grounds of potential persecution. “I was so shocked. They put me on a plane, and I landed here,” she recalled. The…

Early results from Russia’s first parliamentary elections since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine show President Vladimir Putin’s party, United Russia, firmly in the lead, a result many anticipated. The elections, held between Friday and Sunday, were aimed at electing members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, and are expected to reaffirm United Russia’s dominance amid a tightly managed political environment with limited opposition. The Kremlin portrayed the vote as an opportunity for citizens to express their views following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the resulting economic difficulties. Most antiwar candidates were excluded,…

Sierra Leonean pace bowler Samuel Conteh has become only the second player from the country to take 50 wickets in T20 International cricket. He achieved this milestone on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during a match against Botswana in the ILT20 Continent Cup 2026, by dismissing Botswana’s captain, Thatayaone Tshose. Conteh reached this landmark in his 45th T20I innings, underscoring his consistency as a vital part of Sierra Leone’s bowling lineup. He now joins fast bowler George Sesay, who was the first Sierra Leonean to reach 50 T20I wickets during the T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Qualifier A in May 2026. Conteh’s…

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to remain in office despite disappointing exit polls in two local elections for his centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the CDU was initially forecasted to suffer its worst election result ever, but later projections showed the party dipping below the 5% threshold required to remain in parliament. Merz described the situation as “a disaster” for the party. Meanwhile, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was set to receive the highest number of votes in the region, though it is unlikely to form a government due to other parties refusing to collaborate…

The atmosphere at Makeni Central Mosque shifted quickly from prayer to excitement as former President Ernest Bai Koroma arrived for Friday prayers. His presence drew a diverse crowd, from the elderly to children and those dressed in both rags and finery, as they eagerly sought to catch a glimpse of him after years away. Just days before, he had attended a church service in Freetown, reconnecting with his…
