Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie has been sentenced to 200 years in prison for the starvation deaths of 190 children in Shakahola Forest. Prosecutors revealed he persuaded his followers to fast in hopes of reaching heaven before an impending apocalypse. Some victims were also subjected to beatings, buried alive, or discarded in latrines. Alongside Mackenzie, 28 accomplices received prison sentences. This case has sparked significant concerns over the authorities’ inaction despite numerous warning signs since 2017. The broader investigation has confirmed 448 deaths, with around 500 additional suspected victims.
