Reports suggesting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering leaving the Trump administration have been firmly dismissed by him. In an interview with The New York Times, Rubio stated it has “always been my plan” to serve President Donald Trump until the end of his term.
Rubio, who also holds the position of national security adviser, is frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028. Just days before the midterm elections, he made a notable appearance alongside Trump during a campaign rally, briefly addressing a supportive crowd.
When asked about his political future, Rubio declined to comment, saying, “I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore.” Responding to speculation about his departure from the administration, he remarked, “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you.”
Earlier reports from Bloomberg News indicated that Rubio was contemplating his position and had discussions with White House officials about stepping down, but had been encouraged to remain. In response to these claims, the State Department vehemently denied the reports, with Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for global public affairs, labelling the Bloomberg piece “totally made up.” He also dismissed a related article from The Independent about Rubio positioning himself for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination as “completely baseless fake news.”
Rubio has previously indicated he would support Vice President JD Vance if he decided to run for president, and Vance is similarly viewed as a possible contender for the 2028 election.
