US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that a “very big” agreement is underway with Russia aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. This came after an unplanned meeting at the White House with Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to reporters, Trump expressed optimism about the conflict’s resolution, suggesting it could involve “all of Europe.” He stated, “I can’t tell you what I discussed. But I’m just telling you, it’s going to be an agreement, it’s going to be a big agreement.” He added that it would be “very big” and involve more than just Ukraine, promising that “everyone’s going to be thrilled.”
Trump noted that he did not meet with Ukrainian officials who were also present at the White House that day.
Meanwhile, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and US envoy, reported that the US, NATO, and European partners held “productive and substantive discussions” on the Ukraine conflict. He stated their aim was to address the security concerns of all parties involved and work towards agreements that could prevent future conflicts, ahead of discussions next week in Abu Dhabi with representatives from Kyiv and Moscow.
In a related event at the White House, delegations from both Russia and Ukraine acknowledged the efforts of First Lady Melania Trump in brokering a recent ceasefire in Oleshky, a war-affected city. Dmitriev praised her “distinguished humanitarian role” in this initiative, indicating that President Putin had personally instructed him to thank her.
Ukrainian officials also expressed their gratitude, with Davyd Arakhamia, leader of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s parliamentary faction, commending her efforts and encouraging her to continue supporting the Ukrainian people.
