Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has marked one year as the 25th Chief of Army Staff, having taken office on 30 October 2022. During this brief yet impactful period, he has guided the Nigerian Army with purpose, professionalism, and a focus on soldiers’ welfare, resulting in significant institutional reforms and security improvements across the nation.
Upon taking command, Lt Gen Shaibu introduced a command philosophy known as PROSE: Professional Excellence, Robust Administration, Operational Readiness, Strategic Cooperation, and Exemplary Leadership. Central to this philosophy is a ‘Soldier-First’ culture, prioritising the needs and morale of troops, which he sees as crucial for effective combat operations.
Often referred to as the Shaibu Doctrine, this approach has shifted the Army from static defence to more dynamic operations. By emphasising Mission Command principles, subordinate commanders are empowered to respond flexibly to changing battlefield conditions, leading to a more adaptable force.
Significant structural reforms include the expansion of the Army from eight to twelve divisions, endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the recruitment of around 28,000 additional personnel. New units have been created to enhance territorial coverage and response times, especially in high-threat areas. Investments in technology, such as drones and improved intelligence capabilities, are also modernising the Army to address contemporary threats.
Troop welfare has been a priority, with improvements in accommodation, medical support, timely rotations, and upgraded combat equipment feature in his agenda.
Under Lt Gen Shaibu’s leadership, the Army has intensified operations against groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. These efforts have led to the neutralisation of high-value targets, dismantling of camps, and the recovery of substantial arms, while restoring stability in previously dangerous areas.
These successes have been aided by enhanced cooperation between agencies and a strong focus on professionalism and rule of law, principles reinforced by the Chief of Army Staff during interactions with troops.
Lt Gen Shaibu, who has significant operational experience, combines battlefield credibility with genuine concern for the troops facing Nigeria’s security challenges.
As he reflects on his first year, the outcomes are clear: a larger, more structured, and soldier-focused Army that is increasingly equipped to protect national security. While the transformation is ongoing, the foundations laid provide a hopeful path towards a more resilient Nigerian Army capable of ensuring peace and development.
Congratulations to Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu on a commendable first year as Chief of Army Staff, and recognition is due to the officers and soldiers under his command.
