Goodwill (Tanzania) Ceramic Co Ltd is set to expand its operations by adding two new production lines, which are expected to create 1,000 direct jobs and boost daily output to 180,000 square metres of tiles and over 200,000 porcelain pieces. The company broke ground on Tile Line 3 and Daily-Use Porcelain Phase II on Wednesday, with both projects aimed to start full production by June 2027.

This expansion will raise Goodwill’s total investment in Tanzania to $200 million (£167 million), highlighting the firm’s growing ambitions and confidence in the local investment climate. Managing Director Mr Xiaoming Xie described the projects as a significant milestone in the company’s decade-long presence in Tanzania, enhancing its capacity to serve both domestic and international markets.

Mr Xie expressed pride in expanding investments and job creation, stating, “We are proud to expand our investments, create thousands of jobs, and bring the pride of ‘Made in Tanzania’ to Europe and Africa.” Once complete, the new facilities are expected to employ around 4,000 people directly and create approximately 15,000 indirect jobs.

The investment aims to bolster Tanzania’s industrial base by increasing the local processing of minerals, decreasing reliance on imports, and promoting export growth. Mr Xie noted that over 90 per cent of Goodwill’s raw materials are sourced locally, supporting domestic mining and providing business opportunities for local suppliers.

The new Tile Line 3 will incorporate advanced technology for premium tiles, targeting luxury hotels, commercial complexes, and high-end residential projects. The expansion will also support Goodwill’s entry into European markets, with plans to enhance exports to Europe and other African nations.

Mr Xie highlighted that Tanzania’s mineral resources and investment environment present significant potential for high-value manufacturing. He called for government intervention to reduce trade barriers that hinder Tanzanian ceramic exports to the East African Community (EAC), particularly high excise charges that disadvantage local manufacturers.

Coast Regional Commissioner Mr Stanslaus Nyongo praised Goodwill’s expansion, stating it would strengthen the region’s industrial base, create jobs, and enhance government revenue. He noted that the growing industrial activity in the Coast Region is attributed to designated industrial areas, improved infrastructure, and additional resources like electricity and natural gas, alongside efforts to reduce bureaucratic hurdles for investment.
