The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated counterfeit packaging materials valued at over ₦200 million from five shops in Aba, Abia State.
The agency announced that the materials were intended for the production and supply of fake alcoholic beverages and included labels, corks, packs, and outer packaging featuring well-known brand names.
In a statement on Wednesday, NAFDAC said its Investigation and Enforcement operatives carried out the raid following credible intelligence regarding the suspected counterfeit operations. A range of brands was affected, including Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, and Imperial Blue.
The agency reported encountering threats and resistance from traders during the operation, complicating the retrieval of the seized materials. The owners of the shops were not present, prompting NAFDAC to secure the premises to prevent tampering with evidence.
NAFDAC has reached out to the local market union chairman, who has committed to securing the sealed shops and assisting in identifying their owners.
