DAR ES SALAAM: The Ministry of Energy and the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) have discussed ways to enhance public understanding of oil and natural gas exploration and development projects in Tanzania.
The meeting took place on 13 October 2026 at PURA’s offices in Dar es Salaam, attended by key officials including Ms Nteghenjwa Hosseah, Head of the Government Communications Unit at the Ministry of Energy, and Mr Charles Nyangi, Head of Local Content and Stakeholder Engagement at PURA.
Ms Hosseah highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives in oil and gas, noting that public awareness of these projects is still lacking. “We have several upstream petroleum projects underway, including 3D seismic data acquisition in the Lindi–Mtwara Block and preparations for drilling natural gas wells in the Ruvuma Block,” she said. “However, many citizens do not fully understand these projects and their potential benefits.”
She emphasised the ministry’s role in providing clear and timely information to the public to improve understanding.
Mr Nyangi added that PURA is committed to enhancing public communication about these projects while also supporting journalists in their coverage of upstream petroleum activities. He noted that PURA offers training for journalists and opportunities to visit project sites, aiming to better equip them to inform the public.
