President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated a thorough and transparent investigation into the deaths of at least 37 suspected illegal miners held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced this on Friday.
Tinubu emphasised that every Nigerian’s life is important and condemned any loss of life in government custody due to negligence or mistreatment. The incident has caused unrest in the state, prompting the government to impose a curfew.
The President expressed deep concern over the reported deaths, labelling the situation a serious issue requiring immediate scrutiny and accountability. He reiterated that while the Federal Government aims to combat illegal mining, such operations must adhere to the law and respect the dignity of all individuals in custody.
“The fact that these individuals are suspected of illegal mining does not negate their right to humane treatment while in detention. We will not tolerate mass casualties resulting from neglect or failure by public officials,” he said.
Tinubu also called for calm among affected families and assured the public that the government would pursue the truth and act appropriately. He insisted that the investigation, which should cover various aspects surrounding the detainees’ treatment and circumstances of their deaths, must be comprehensive and free from obstruction.
“The suspension of officers is merely an administrative action; it cannot replace a criminal investigation where warranted,” he noted. The President instructed the Ministry of Interior and the NSCDC to fully cooperate with investigative authorities, ensuring no obstructions to the truth-finding process.
