Governors in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot dictate the political alliances President Bola Tinubu should pursue for the 2027 elections, according to Amb. Tajudeen Olesin. Olesin recently switched from the APC to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State.
Supporting the Nyesom Wike-led Rainbow Coalition, Olesin challenged APC governors to focus on their own performance in office. His statement comes after the APC Governors Forum declared it would not support any alliances that could jeopardise Tinubu’s re-election ambitions or undermine the party.
Olesin argued that political figures are free to form alliances and support candidates outside their own parties. “Wike has the political right to decide who the coalition will support in the election,” he said. He added that parties without presidential candidates can back those from other platforms.
He urged the APC governors to demonstrate their achievements using state resources, emphasising the need to address issues like poverty, education, healthcare, and job creation. “If they are proud of their accomplishments, let them showcase what they’ve achieved,” he said.
On Tinubu’s political relationships, Olesin insisted that the President should determine which alliances would benefit his re-election efforts. He called on the governors to strengthen party structures and engage with voters based on their records.
“The emerging political contest should be taken to the electorate, allowing them to decide,” he concluded, reaffirming the coalition’s relevance.
